The Nudist/Naturist Hall of Shame grew out of Nikki Craft’s investigation of sexual predators, child exploitation, institutional practices, and the treatment of people who raised alarms within and around organized nudism and naturism.

The article It Only Takes One draws together approximately 160 primary-source documents—including court and police records, FBI notices, Senate testimony, contemporaneous news reports, private correspondence, and the nudist movement’s own publications. Read together, these sources reveal patterns that isolated cases cannot: screening systems and “Caution Lists” that detected essentially none of the documented offenders; cases exposed instead by children, parents, teachers, photo-processing workers, police, and other outsiders; and institutions that often acted against the people who raised warnings rather than against the conditions they documented.

The record also documents a sharply gendered pattern in the treatment of seven people who spoke from inside or adjacent to the movement. The two men were pushed out through procedural means. The five women were attacked through character—described as psychotic, vindictive, disruptive, or driven by personal agendas.

The archive does not argue that nudity itself harms children. It distinguishes nudity from failures involving child safety, predatory access, exploitation, screening, institutional denial, and responses to documented warnings.

The relevant question is not what percentage of nudists are dangerous. It is what institutions do when a dangerous person is identified.

Taken together, this record serves as a powerful warning to parents: do not rely on an institution’s assurances, screening systems, or internal lists when a child’s safety is at stake. Ask what happens when a dangerous person is identified, whether warnings are documented and shared, and whether the institution acts against the danger—or against the person who reported it.

What “SPLIT” means in this archive. SPLIT is the internal series label used to organize records arising from the late-1980s break between Nikki Craft and leaders and institutions of the organized naturist movement, together with the accountability work that followed. It is an archival identifier—not the public title of this page.

Craft began collecting cases in 1984 and actively developed the Hall of Shame record for roughly a decade and a half. The published material is a substantial but deliberately incomplete selection. Additional unpublished and unfinished files remain in the larger archive.

The Hall of Shame assembled case reports, movement publications, correspondence, warnings, newsletters, and public records so that researchers could examine both individual conduct and institutional response.

The materials also preserve the history of The ICONoclast and N.O.P.E.—Naturists and Nudists Opposing Pornographic Exploitation—along with records of censorship, conflict inside movement publications, and the consequences faced by people who challenged the leadership.
